Fruit Flies (Drosophila) are small nuisance flies whose members are often called fruit flies, vinegar flies or wine flies. They are a pest in many environments including bars, restaurants and anywhere else where food and beverages are prepared or stored.
They are generally attracted by ripened or rotting fruit, vegetables and fermenting liquids and can be a very difficult pest to deal with. One species in particular, Drosophila melanogaster, is the most common. Although the term Drosophila is often used synonymously with this species, the entire genus contains about 1,500 species and is very diverse in appearance, behaviour, and breeding habitat.
The best method of avoiding problems with fruit flies is to eliminate the source of attraction through hygiene controls and appropriate food and waste management. As this cannot always be 100% effective, the AgriSense Fruit Fly Trap Kit, which is a combination of trap, liquid attractant and glue-coated catching strips, will help catch those flies unaffected by the treatment.
Attraction is the key
The specially formulated liquid attractant uses the fruit flies instinctive attraction to ripened, rotting fruit and vegetables against them. The trap’s yellow lid section also acts as a visual attractant. Most traps utilise the liquid as the sole trapping agent, which means flies can and do escape from traps, however integral to the AgriSense trap is the sticky insert which ensures that when flies are drawn into the pot, they land on the vertical surface above the liquid, where they are caught and cannot escape. Although a liquid trap, the trap has an integrated funnel which is designed to avoid spillage, provided the correct liquid level is used.
Tips and Techniques
- Place traps close to infestations for best results.
- Move pot within the area to optimise catch
- Check and refill the liquid bait if level drops
- Replace the sticky strip every 4 weeks or when full of insects
- Replace the liquid fully every 4 weeks
- Use only with the AgriSense fruit fly attractant
